Sophie Gengembre Anderson (French 1823-1903) was a French born British Victorian Painter who also was active briefly in America. Her work "Elaine" was the first public collection purchase of a woman artist. A world record price for her work of more than 1 Pounds was achieved by "No Walk Today" at Sotheby’s London in November 2008. The portrait depicts a young female child in a field of lilac posing with a bundle of lilac in her hands. Previously held in Private Collection. Original Preserved Signature on Back.
