David Roberts (1796-1864) (after) Louis Haghe (1806-1885) (lithographer), "The Church of the Purification" (Jerusalem), from The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia, F.G. Moon, London: 1842-49. Hand-colored lithograph. Framed under glass overall 23" x 28.75". Note: This print is sometimes subtitled “The Church of the Purification, ” referring to the name by which the Al-Aqsa Mosque was known when it was captured by Christians during the crusades in 1099 until it was recaptured by Saladin in 1187. In the foreground, a woman and a group of men dressed in robes and turbans and other traditional Arab garb rest on a half-buried ancient stone structure, giving a sense of scale to the sweeping view as well as a flavor of the local culture. Roberts dated the sketch April 9th, 1839.
