Mask of Shame were used as punishment throughout the Middle Ages up until the eighteenth century. Shame masks were nearly exclusive to women.They were designed to fit woman who were known gossipers. Not only were the mask extremely uncomfortable they had mouth pieces to add insult to injury. Also known as the "Scold’s Bridle" or Schandmaske. Mounted on wooden plank.
